September 2014 Retail Sales decreased -0.3% for the month. August was revised to a 0.6% increase. Retail sales have now increased 4.3% from a year ago. September's decline was due to autos and gas, yet many sales categories were down for the month. Even Online retailers declined while Electronics and Appliance stores had an unusual 3.4% monthly increase.
February 2014 Retail Sales increased 0.3% for the month. This is the first increase in three months. January was revised all the way down to -0.6% and December's drop was -0.3%. Retail sales have now increased just 1.5% from a year ago. January's decline was due to a real nose dive in auto sales, down -2.3% for the month. Online retailers continue their rise with a 6.3% increase from a year ago.
December 2013 Retail Sales increased 0.2% for the month on groceries, booze, gas and clothing. Retail sales have now increased 4.1% from a year ago. Electronics & Appliances tanked with their sales down -2.5% for December. Auto sales plunged -1.9% from the previous month, but that's OK, they are still up 6.2% for the year. Holiday sales increased 3.8%, a fine showing of more consumerism in America.
September 2013 Retail Sales decreased by -0.1% on auto sales, which plunged -2.4% from the previous month. Motor vehicle dealers sales have still increased 5.8% from a year ago. Without all motor vehicles & parts sales, September retail sales would have shown a 0.4% increase.
August 2013 Retail Sales increased by 0.2% on auto sales, which increased 0.9% from last month. Motor vehicle dealers are having a good year. Their sales have increased 12.3% from a year ago. Without motor vehicles & parts sales, August retail sales would have been a 0.1% increase from last month. Building materials and clothing dragged retail sales down as they declined -0.9% and -0.8% respectively.
June 2013 Retail Sales increased by 0.4% on auto sales, which increased 2.1% from last month. Motor vehicle dealers are having a good year. Their sales have increased 12.9% from a year ago. Without motor vehicles & parts sales, June retail sales would have shown no change from last month. Furniture had a surprise showing with a 2.4% increase in sales. If one removes gasoline sales from retail sales, overall the increase would have been 0.3%.
March 2013 Retail Sales decreased, by -0.4%. This is the lowest monthly change in retail sales since June 2012. Gasoline sales declined the most, -2.2% for the month. If one removes gasoline sales from retail sales, overall the decrease from February would have been -0.2%, or half of the monthly decline. Auto sales decreased -0.6% and minus all autos & parts but including gas sales, retail sales dropped -0.4% from last month. This report should amplify Wall Street's worries people are so tapped out they have stopped spending and ruin their stock market run up.

If one removes gasoline sales from retail sales, overall the increase from January would have been 0.6%. Auto sales increased 1.1% and minus all autos & parts but including gas sales, retail sales increased 1.0% from last month. This report should alleviate Wall Street's worries people are so tapped out they have stopped spending. It didn't happen, yet.
November 2012 Retail Sales increased, by 0.3%. Gasoline sales tanked -4.0% from October on lower prices. If one removes gasoline sales from retail sales, overall the increase from October would have been 0.8%. Auto sales increased 1.6% and minus all autos & parts but including gas sales, retail sales had no change from last month. Retail sales are reported by dollars, not by volume with price changes removed.
October 2012 Retail Sales decreased, by -0.3%, Autos & Parts alone dropped -1.5% while auto dealers, part of autos & parts sales, declined by -1.6%. Minus autos & parts, retail sales had no change from last month. September's monthly percentage change was revised upward, from 1.1% to 1.3%. Retail sales are reported by dollars, not by volume, so dropping prices often reports as a decline in sales.
