January's Jobs Report Shows Strong Payroll Growth for 2014

The BLS employment report is another good showing for payroll jobs as growth was 257,000.  January is the month of revisions and November 2014 is now a 423,000 jobs added blowout with December 2014 not far behind with 329,000 jobs added.  We're on year eight after the start of the great recession and 2014 is finally when America started seeing some jobs growth.

Another Month, Another Piss Poor Jobs Report

The BLS employment report shows total nonfarm payroll jobs gained were another dismal 113,000 for January 2014, with private payrolls adding 142,000 jobs.  Government jobs decreased by -29,000.  The silver lining of the jobs report is while the government continues to cut, cut, cut, there wasn't a lot of growth in crappy jobs and gains achieved were in typically higher paying ones.  The U.S. post office alone shed 9,000 jobs.

December's Dismal Payrolls Mark Recession Six Year Anniversary

The BLS employment report shows total nonfarm payroll jobs gained were a paltry 74,000 for December 2013, with private payrolls adding 87,000 jobs.  Government jobs decreased by -13,000.  Worse, 40,400 of jobs gained were temporary ones.  That's over half, 54.6%, of December's jobs were temporary.

A Graphic Look at Payrolls from the September Employment Report

The BLS unemployment report shows total nonfarm payroll jobs gained were 148,000 for September 2013, with private payrolls adding 126,000 jobs.  Government jobs increased by 22,000.  Additionally 20,000 of September's jobs were temporary ones.   Overall job growth was barely enough to keep up with the growing population.

Charts from BLS Employment Report Show Bad Jobs Continue to Rule in 2013

The BLS unemployment report shows total nonfarm payroll jobs gained were 169,000 for August 2013, with private payrolls adding 152,000 jobs.  Government jobs increased by 17,000.  Probably the worse news of this report is July was revised down by 58,000 jobs to show only a 104,000 payroll gain and June was also revised down by 16,000 to 172,000 jobs added for that month.

A Detailed Look at the BLS Payrolls Employment Report for June 2013

The BLS unemployment report shows total nonfarm payroll jobs gained were 195,000 for June 2013, with private payrolls adding 202,000 jobs.  Government jobs declined by 7,000.  May was revised up by 20,000 to show a 195,000 payroll gain and April was also revised up by 50,000 to 199,000 jobs added for that month.   While this is great news, unfortunately the types of jobs gained are mostly low paying ones.

Don't Blame March Retail Sales -0.4% Drop on Gas Prices

March 2013 Retail Sales decreased, by -0.4%.   This is the lowest monthly change in retail sales since June 2012.  Gasoline sales declined the most, -2.2% for the month.  If one removes gasoline sales from retail sales, overall the decrease from February would have been -0.2%, or half of the monthly decline.  Auto sales decreased -0.6% and minus all autos & parts but including gas sales, retail sales dropped -0.4% from last month.  This report should amplify Wall Street's worries people are so tapped out they have stopped spending and ruin their stock market run up.

Retail Sales Increase 1.1% on Gas and Autos for February 2013

February 2013 Retail Sales increased, by 1.1%.   Gasoline sales shot up 5.0% from January on higher prices. If one removes gasoline sales from retail sales, overall the increase from January would have been 0.6%.  Auto sales increased 1.1% and minus all autos & parts but including gas sales, retail sales increased 1.0% from last month.  This report should alleviate Wall Street's worries people are so tapped out they have stopped spending.    It didn't happen, yet.

Retail Sales Only Increase 0.3% Due to Lower Gas Prices for November 2012

November 2012 Retail Sales increased, by 0.3%. Gasoline sales tanked -4.0% from October on lower prices. If one removes gasoline sales from retail sales, overall the increase from October would have been 0.8%. Auto sales increased 1.6% and minus all autos & parts but including gas sales, retail sales had no change from last month. Retail sales are reported by dollars, not by volume with price changes removed.
